The Wonderful Century was set apart from all other periods of time because of the use of fossil fuel. It was during this time that concern began to be voiced over the pollution caused by burning of fossil fuel and the running out of coal.  Inventors like Augustine Mouchot and John Erickson said the only way civilization could endure would be by turning to solar energy and they began to turn their attention to solar thermal devices to power a steam engine.
